What is an AI coding agent?

An AI coding agent edits a repository, runs commands, and keeps going until a task is done or it gets stuck. An AI coding assistant that only completes the current line is a copilot. Both show up in this search, so the list includes the IDE assistants people mean when they say coding agent.

AI coding tools, an AI software engineer, and an open-source agent you run yourself are all in the same comparison. They are not the same install.

How an AI coding assistant works

Cursor and GitHub Copilot live in the editor and suggest or edit while you watch. Claude Code and OpenCode run in the terminal against the repo. Devin is sold as a more autonomous software engineer, and Windsurf's site now presents Devin Desktop while still listing Windsurf prices. Cline is the open editor extension where you bring the model. Jules publishes task limits rather than a dollar price.

The shared step is a diff a person can read before it lands. If the product will not show you that, it does not belong in a production repo.

Features of AI coding tools

Autocomplete and a repository agent get the same headline in roundups. Separate them.

  • Edits more than the current line, if you wanted an agent
  • A way to read the diff before it lands
  • A free tier or a published monthly price
  • A model you can name, or a clear statement that you bring your own

Benefits of an AI software engineer

The expensive human time moves to review. The plan price is visible before the usage bill, on the products that publish one.

  • Spend the expensive human time on review
  • Pick a terminal agent or an editor on purpose
  • Know the plan price before the usage bill arrives

Who uses an AI coding agent

Developers and the managers who pay for their seats. The public argument is mostly Cursor's editor versus Claude Code's usage, not a single winner. Teams that want to generate an app from a prompt, without a repository they already have, should read the app builder list instead.

AI coding assistant pricing

Starting points we could verify: Claude Code from $17/mo. OpenAI Codex from $20. Cursor from $20/mo. GitHub Copilot free, then $10/user/mo. Devin free, then $20/mo. Google Jules does not publish a dollar price. Last checked 5 October 2026.

Usage on top of the seat is the bill people argue about. The sticker price is not the whole month.

How to choose an AI coding agent

If you want the editor, start with Cursor or Copilot. If you want a terminal agent and you already pay Anthropic, read Claude Code's plan limits. Cline and OpenCode are the free, bring-your-own-model options.

Devin and Windsurf now sit in the same Cognition product family, so do not buy both without reading what each install actually is.
